Youth Sports Spotlight

Finalists Named for Double-Goal Coach Awards presented by Liberty Mutual

Return to Blog...

At Positive Coaching Alliance, we receive too many e-mails and phone calls from anguished parents, whose children are suffering at the hands of win-at-all-cost youth sports coaches. Of course, we also hear of inspirational coaches, Double-Goal Coaches®, whose first goal is winning, and whose second, more-important goal is teaching life lessons through sports. In fact, we make sure we hear of such coaches by inviting nominations for the Double-Goal Coach Awards presented by Liberty Mutual.

Of the 50 award finalists named here, 20 award winners will be announced the week of February 15th. Each winner will receive a $250 cash prize and recognition in PCA publications and press releases. Any winners from Northern California will be honored at the 2010 National Youth Sports Awards sponsored by Deloitte, where you will have an opportunity to meet them.

Slated for April 17 at Stanford University's Maples Pavilion, this year's awards dinner is co-chaired by NFL Hall of Fame Quarterback Steve Young and features a keynote by Jim Collins, author of Good to Great and How the Mighty Fall.

This year, we received a record number of nominations, proving that Double-Goal Coaching is taking hold; that more and more people value a positive, character-building youth sports experience; and that no matter the sport, no matter the location, people recognize great coaching when they see evidence of it in their children's athletic displays and in their children's smiles.

Collectively, the 50 awards finalists listed below have brought millions of smiles to the youth athletes they've coached. It is our privilege to bring smiles to these coaches' faces as they read their names here. We hope you also will give them a smile through your note of support, which you can write by clicking on the Comments link below.

Thank you, for being a positive role model for all kids especially my own who have benefited from your selfless volunteerism, positive guidance and support. Congrats and may you go all the way you deserve it.

The nomination of Tom MacLean is a win for the Positive Coaching Alliance. I've seen Coach MacLean at multiple Championship games and regular season games. The Raiders always try hard and play cleanly. Whether they win or lose, I admire Coach MacLean's style as a sports fan and much more so as a person. He iinstlls their slogan, "Built for Others" in every facet of his coaching.

What up Coach MacLean. It has been awesome to play under you since 4th grade. You are the best man for this. Its really cool to look up to you, and i always listen you to you when you talk. It was awesome when the team won the 2009 CYO championship game, and when the Varsity team won it in 2007. There is no one better for this. Congratulations to you. and Good Luck.

Congratulations Scott!

I can go on for eternity speaking if Coach Rich Gonzalez. He is not the man who worries so much about his success as he does about his value. His dedication as a coach is "Priceless". The one major factor about this man is he never over coaches, for it is the worst thing you can do to a player. Mr. Gonzalez, alway's makes his players see what they can be, rather than what they are. The one test of his coaching, is that when he leaves, others will carry on successfully. He is a true inspiration to whomever he coaches. He's the best they come.

We've watched Stefan develop as a soccer player since the age of 4, playing for local travel clubs, high school and college ball -- it's truly a pleasure to see you evolve your passion for the sport into a coaching role. Recognition of your accomplishments as a coach through your fun and motivational approach seems a natural extension of who you are. Congratulations Stefan! Well Done!!

Congratulations to Scott Kennedy. You are a tireless advocate for the athletes at Mission High School; A student population woefully lacking in mentors and positive reinforcement for the dream of college. You show students that it is about how people treat each other and behave in the world, and how to be the best team member possible.

We need more coaches like Scott Kennedy who show kids what it means to be a good sport, a good teammate and to take pride in their contribution to the team. Scott left an indelible mark on our son about how to be the most positive kind of competitor. Many of the kids from Coach Kennedy's high school have no college example to follow. Scott runs a foundation which sends underprivilaged high schools kids to college on soccer scholarships. This foundation has changed the lives of so many students! We are grateful to see Coach Kennedy's efforts recognized by this wonderful nomination!

Houston's Trey Cornelius, Will McDaniel, Bob McLamb, and Scotty Zornes from West University Little League are World Champions! They get our vote! What an effort on their part, the players' part and their friends and families - the way it should be done!

Scott Kennedy has been working with my nine year old grandson Max over the past three years on his soccer game. Max is a good listener and wants to be a great player. Mr. Kennedy has brought the passion and love of the game to the forefront for Max, but that is what a great coach can do for a player. I have been a sports announcer for 24 years both for college and high school observing good and not so good coaching. The best are but a few and Mr. Kennedy is one of the best!. God bless this family man for sharing his time and talent with so many others.

Coach Newton has built a phenomenal program at Menlo starting with his incredible coaching staff. The program is comprehensive and thoughtful and is having a profound positive effect on the kids. They are taught how to deliver to their full potential both on and off the field and also the value of close and sustained friendships.

Mark, You deserve this recognition! Not only have you created an excellent football program at Menlo; you have been instrumental in the character development of a fine group of young men. Thank you!

I wholeheartedly support the recognition of Ben Frank of the Anaheim Wildcats Hockey Club as an outstanding, positive coach. As an advanced level soccer coach, who has been a coach administrator for 9 years, I have experience with good coaches, and bad. Ben is great!!! He has kept the positive energy flowing our entire season, even when the kids performance and often the parents attitudes could have easily resulted in unpleasant experiences for all. Even though we have not had a "winning" season by the scoreboard, it has been exceptionally rewarding to have my son coached by such a caring and professional individual. Way to go Ben!!!!

Scott Kennedy is an inspriation to all who know him. His work extends far beyond his beloved soccer team and Athletic Dept. into the lives of the underserved youth who make up the student body at Mission High School. 70% of these students live below the poverty line and Scott has introduced a program which extends beyond excellent team work on the field into excelling academically, making college a viable option for all participating students. Scott is a remarkable and positive coach in every sense of the word.

Thank you for being such an inspiration to not only me and the team but to all of our school. You made El Camino a volleyball school. Now everyone sees us as an athletic inspiration and wants to follow in our footsteps.
Thank you again,
Lainey Gordon

Scott, Congratulations! What you have accomplished at Mission High School is amazing. You are loved and respected not only by athletes, but by teachers and volunteers who have the opportunity to work with you. You do so much more than just coach young men and women on your soccer teams. You motivate and inspire them to work hard and give their all and to look beyond the soccer field and high school. Scott, you are remarkable and we salute you and wish you the best.

I first met Mr. Kennedy in 2006 at mission high school – a true New Yorker and a Yankees fan. Here at mission, Mr. Kennedy works hard to make sure that the students understand the value of not just being a team member but a valuable member of society. He pushes them, encourages them and yes he corrects them when they need it most. I’ve watched Mr. Kennedy go out of his way to get a student extra help with their school work, college information and so much more. When Mr. Kennedy asks for a favor, it’s always to help a student never anything for himself. If you ever come to mission high school, walk its hallowed halls turn left go down the stairs, there you will find Mr. Kennedy’s office filled with students – his door is always open. Scott Kennedy is all about the students here at mission high school.
Congratulations Mr. Kennedy

Lance Wilson, I would like to congratulate you on being nominated as a Finalist for this years Double-Goal Coach award. Being 1 of 50 Finalist out of thousands of other coaches in the U.S. is quite an accomplishment and a well deserved accomplishment at that. It really comes at no surprise to see why you were nominated by people that see what a great job you are doing with their children. You are a great soccer coach, and like every other coach out there that wants to win, you also inspire the kids to do their best even if it comes down to a loss. For you it is not a choice of always winning a game, but winning the respect and friendship of the kids you coach. Way to go Lance!!!

Way to go Lance!
It is great to see you getting this recognition. We appreciate your willingness to role model the soccer work ethic and your focus on skills. More importantly though you model life skills for your athletes and their families by seeking communication and responding with an integrity that is difficult to find in our world.

Debby Colberg,
Naturally your reputation preceeded our acquaintance and so naturally we gravitated toward the legendary accolades. Fully expecting to find someone who didn't live up to their public notoriety, however, we were mistaken. We found you to engender a love for the game of volleyball and to be infinitely generous with your time and expertise. You are as accomplished on a personal level as you are otherwise, and you're one heck of a brownie maker! We feel certain rise or fall, you will represent the embodiment of what this award stands for, with grace. Bravo!!!

Congradulation Glenn Bradley. For many years you have shown young people how to enjoy sports. I have seen that in watching your team and we now drive two hours to play for you. That is my vote of confidence. The fact that several people drive hours to come to practice says alot. You have not only taught softball but also how to be a good person and that is important in life. I have only known you a short time but feel my daughter will be a better person for joining your team

Coach Kennedy has done a wonderful job over the years teaching Mission High School students the life lessons that can be taught through sports. Mr. Kennedy makes sure his players are not only good soccer players but good citizens. He truly cares about his teams and works hard to give them everything he has.

I vote for Glenn Bradley. He is a great person and father. He cares for his players like they were his own kids. He has great coaching abilities and even works with players who don't play on his team. He wants the girls to not just do well on the field but to do well in the classroom and what ever else they strive to do or be.

I cannot express strongly enough how deserving COACH GLENN BRADLEY is of this award. Coach Glenn is a true example of greatness on and off the field. Our family has experienced the true sincerity of his heart. He and his family have gone above and beyond what might be expected of anyone else. Coach Glenn has touched the life of our daughter Zoe in imeasurable ways.
We met Coach Bradley 2 years ago. My daughter was not on his team but we were aquainted through both our daughters playing middle school ball. Shortly after the season started, we tragically lost our 15 yr. old son.
Barely knowing Coach Glenn and his family, they were there to offer help with anything we might need. Without any time to prepare they took our two dogs into their home while we flew to another state for the funeral of our son.
His support of Zoe did not end there. Since that time he has continued to coach, influence and inspire my daughter's love for the game of softball and life!
Coach Glenn has a unique capacity to instill self confidence through hard work, team pride and individual achievement.
It is because of GLENN BRADLEY that we are proud to be in the Comets' organization!

Glen is a well deserved coach who touches the lives of many young ladies whether they play for him or another team, he is always willing work with them to make them best ball player they can be. He has the capability to push them to levels they never thought possible, giving the self confidence, team pride and the skills to work hard. He is always telling them how good they are and never ends a practice without telling them how proud he is of them. We are all so blessed to have such a caring coach who goes out of his way to be there for our girls and to be available to work with them whenever they feel they need that extra help. #2 loves him dearly and is SO PROUD to be able to call him COACH!!!
GO COMETS!!!!

Congratulations to Glenn Bradley of the COMETS 96. Even though we have only known Glenn for a few months, it is very evident he is deserving of this honor. He motivates these girls in a way I have seen no other coach do in all of my softball experience. His practices are demanding and his expectations are high, but I never hear any of the girls complain. They always WANT to do their best for Glenn. One thing that has struck me as being very impressive about Glenn is the sincere interest he has in the development of these young ladies not just as softball players, but as people. During their first practice together as a team, he sat down with all of the girls and asked each of them about their plans for college and the future. His interest in their development is not short-term, but he wants these ladies to succeed in the game of life. There will eventually come a day when my daughter no longer puts on the Comets uniform, but there is no doubt the time spent with this team will have had a positive impact on her life, and "Coach Glenn" will always have a special place in her heart; she will always be a "Comet" because of what she has learned from him. Thanks Glenn! Bernie, Carri, and Grandma

I vote for Mr. Kennedy. He is working very hard at Mission High School just for one reason. Which is to give us the best. He doesn't care much about your talent,he is there to make sure you learn lessons to take with you after high school. . He would not keep somebody on his teams if they are giving negative energy/ attitude to the team, he/she could be talented or a great student. He looks out for the best interest of the teams. "everybody is equal on the team including me".

One of the lessons that i will take from him is "WHEN YOU PUT YOUR HEART AND BRAIN TOGETHER, YOU CAN REACH FAR AND GO ANYWHERE"

Every time I come to practice I learn something new from you, and that's only one of the reasons why I don't mind driving one and a half hours to Alabama for practice. You have been my coach since i was 7 years old. I wouldnt have it any other way. You have never given up on me. To this day you still teach me more and more skills i need to know to succeed in this game and in life. You do everything for this game. You not only help us succeed in the game but also in life. You push us to be better leaders, players, young ladies, students, and all around people. You keep it fun for everyone while still accomplishing great goals. Your not only a coach to me anymore, you a 2nd dad. I know if i need anything you would be here for me whenever i needed it. Your are so close to your team we call it family, that we remind you to take your diabetes shot, eat, and not to kill us when we get on your nerves(: loud mouths attitudes and alot of energy is just the beggining of what you put up with. You say your going to retire softball and go to baseball every year but we all know you love the game to much to let it go(: You deserve this award more than anyone. I love you as i always will. Keep pushing me to be my best. It will keep paying off. I know it will. Thanks for always being there for me. My vote defiantly goes to you.

Congratulations Coach Glenn,

I've been sitting here trying to find the words to say, but nothing seems exactly right.
You've been my coach for as long as I can remember, but you've also been like another dad to me. You've taught me everything I know about softball and many things about life. You showed me that grades are the most important thing and that the mental part of softball is more important than the physical. You've pushed me and made me realize that you have to set goals for your team as well as yourself, and that if you work hard enough you can and will achieve them. You kept encouraging and pushing me to try new stances and new ways of hitting during my four year "slump." You never gave up or quit when I still couldn't hit. When my confidence was down and I didn't believe in myself, you picked me back up. I remember you telling me while you were teaching me how to slap "I don't care how you get on bases, were getting you on" and that meant a lot. You also put up with all of us Comets, that comes along with the loud mouths, attitudes and everything in between. I don't understand how you do it, but you do. You spend so much time and put a tremendous amount of effort into making us the best.
For me, leaving your team and your work every other year is extremely difficult because I know that I won't find another team like the one you have put together.
Your an incredible coach, father, and clearly deserve this award. My vote clearly goes to you.
I love you.
-Sam.

Coach Glenn Bradley is the best coach I've ever played for. He has taught me so many things that you wouldn't think you would learn on the softball field. He pushes me to do better every day and dosen't accept anything that's not my best. He not only pushes me to be the best in softball but also in school. He won't let us play if we have below a B. For other teams I've played for practice is just a social thing, but for his practices we practice long and hard and all of our hard work shows up on the softball feild. He isn't only a coach for us he is also interested and concerend in other areas of our lives. Coach Glenn has taught us all the true meaning of being a TEAM! It was a dream of mine to play for him because I had heard of what a great coach he is and now I'm playing for him and the Comets 96. I would NOT be the catcher and person I am today if it wasnt for him.

This is for Coach Glenn Bradley. What a great human being! He has coached our daughter since she was 9 years old. She is now almost 13 and still enjoys her lessons with coach Glenn.
Glenn has given her so many opportunitys that other coaches would not have. She respects him so much as a person and a coach. In the 4th grade she decided he was one of the person's she admired most and wrote a paper on him it was wonderful. No other person deserves this more than Glenn he dedicates ALL his free time rain or shine to these girls with the only intentions of making them better young ladies as well as better softball players! Some might think he is a bit rough around the edges but once you get to know him you will see what most people see in him a great asset to those he helps in the softball world and others around him!!

I have been with Glenn Bradley for many, many years helping him through out the years with coaching on and off the field. I`ve seen this man get these girls to do things that are just simply amazing by drilling them to become a better player and to be a better person. I`ve been around this game for a long time, during this time, I`ve met alot of coaches, but never one who is so committed to the girls and to the game. You just really have to be there to see what I`m talking about. REALLY YOU DO!!! He has a gift that very few people have to be able to push a person to the limit and then some. I am very proud of my daughter in all aspects of her life. She is a extremely great ballplayer and gives her ALL and then some. Glenn has done this to her and for that, I will forever be grateful.
You want to vote for a great coach, then vote for Glenn Bradley.

My vote is for Glenn Bradley. Not only is he a GREAT coach, he is a wonderful father and husband. He has been coaching since he was 18 years old. He was coaching long before we had children of our own. It is something he genuinely enjoys. He has coached basketball, softball, baseball and football. You would have to look really hard to find a child who does not like to play for Glenn. He commits so much of his time to helping these players not only be the best player they can be on the field but also the best person off the field. He is always concerned about every players grades and encouraging them to stay out of trouble. Glenn is 50 wins away from 500 Wins in travel softball. He is the Head Coach of the 2009 ASA "A" Hall of Fame 12U Champions. His team came in 5th Place at the ASA "A" 12U Nationals in Normal, IL last year. In 2008, they were the USFA "A" 12U State Champs, the ASA "A" State runnerup and they came in 15th place at the ASA "A" 12U Nationals in Montgomery, AL. In 2007, they were the ASA "A" 10U State Champs and they came in 5th Place at the ASA "A" 10U Nationals in Auburn, AL in 2007. This as anyone can imagine is an amazing accomplishment. There have been many girls come and go on Glenn's teams, but most will tell you the same. He is a great coach!! And they all have learned so much from him. He is truly deserving of this award!!

to keep this simple and get strait to the point, this man does things with these young ladies that are just down right amazing! from teaching them to be better *ballplayers-*better students-*to respect their parents, i mean the list goes on and on. And its not just the girls that he inspires, he has made me the coach i am today and my daughter the player she is today and she loves this man like a 2nd dad. So if anyone deserves this award it would have to be Coach Glenn. Go Comets!!

Tom Ryan of the Branson School has our vote for your Double Gold Coach Award. But, my guess is Tom might say the first goal in coaching would be life's lessons and the second, winning. coach glenn bradley, thanks for all that you do and thanks for teaching me soo much not just about the game but about life. i mean i may be your daughter but i love how i was, and still am, the most unatheletic kid on the team, and you turned me into one of the best pithcers in the southeast. not only cause i can strike people out and throw really fast, its because you taught me to have the "IT" factor. which means not only to be the best on the field but off the field as well. for an example to be respectful to everyone no matter how much you dislike them and keep my grades up. when i was in the second grade i was the worst kid in the class. i had to sit next to the teacher and my grades were Ds and Fs. But now i have been an AB honer roll student for the past two years, and i am one of the best kids in all of my class. and without your help that would not be true. so i thank you for everything. i love you very much!! You really deserve this award!!!!!

Scott Kennedy goes far beyond most professionals when it comes to supporting and encouraging students not only in athletics but in life. He is always ready to tell students that they can do it - go to college, play sports, succeed. As a 40 year teacher, I have been impressed with his positive spirit and commitment.
He is very deserving of recognition.

My vote is for Coach Glenn Bradley. Thanks for teaching me everthing I know about baseball. You are more than a coach or a dad you are my best freind. You are the one I can come to with my problems and questions. You are more than a coach that says "keep your eye on the ball" you are the kind a coach that breaks it down and explains. Thanks for all your time and dedication to me. Love Case

Glenn Bradley should be in the "Coaches Hall Of Fame!" If a Coach's job is to get his players to do what they don't want to do so they can accomplish what they want to accomplish, then Glenn is a real coach. He is not the coach because it says so on his shirt or because he stands at 3rd base and says stop and go. He is a real coach because of the time, engery and effort he puts into every team and every person he helps. If you measure great coaching by awards and trophies then Glenn wins, however, I measure great coaches by what the players do when NOT on the field, and Glenn has taught life lessons to the players in his past. It is an honor to call him my friend and to have him influence my 2 daughters. Glenn is from a small town in Alabama, and to this world he may not mean much, but to me and his players he means the world to us!

Congratulations to Michelle Zeeff McCArthy. My coach and dearest friend. She has helped so many young women to grow and rise above the politics and difficulties in the the sport of figure skating. Her work with adult skaters is amazing. Her ability to respect us as athletes and urge us to be the best we can be helps us at each point in our lives. She's the best!

Coach Glenn has been a great inspiration in my life even though i have only known him for a short time. I drive 2 hours to practice for him and i never regret it because he teaches me leadership, team work and self confidence. He not only pushes us to work hard on the field but we also have to push ourselves to do well off the field! He makes our practices fun but we are learning in every drill we do.He has made me realize that i can set standards for myself that i never thought i could reach because he will help to push me towards them. That is why coach glenn deserves this awards.
Love,
Emily

LANCE WILSON...the most deserving coach on this list of 50! We are proud to have someone who not only represent our soccer club and our players well, but also teaches them the finer life lessons. We wish you the best of luck!

WTG Coach Foote! You are a tremendous role model for all the teams you coach in AYSO 1466. You make soccer fun. Our kids in Region 1466 are learning and growing because of the great effort that you put in each and every week! Thank you so very much.
