As any sports parent and too many youth athletes will tell you, it's not easy to find a great coach. That's part of the reason PCA exists: to help develop great youth sports coaches. We do that daily in our live and online workshops through instruction and interaction, and we do it annually through inspiration, finding coaches who are already great, honoring them with PCA's Double-Goal Coach Award® presented by Liberty Mutual, and holding those coaches up as examples for more coaches to emulate.
This year, we honor these 20, who embody Double-Goal Coaching, whose first goal is winning, and whose second, more-important goal is teaching life lessons through sports:
Roger Barta, Smith Center High School Football (Smith Center, KS)
Debby Colberg, 5 Starz Volleyball Club (Davis, CA)
Trey Cornelius, Will McDaniel, Bob McLamb, Scotty Zornes, West University Little League (Houston, TX)
Kim Everist, Campolindo High School Water Polo/USA Junior National Water Polo Team (Pleasant Hill, CA)
Rich Gonzalez, Brentwood Youth Activities Baseball (Bay Shore, NY)
Curtis Haggins, Roadrunner Sports Club/Mid-Peninsula High School Basketball (Menlo Park, CA)
Tom Jaeger, West Salem High School Soccer (Salem, OR)
Scott Kennedy, Mission High School Soccer/Athletic Director (San Francisco, CA)
Rob Kurtz, Bethesda Chevy Chase High School Soccer (Bethesda, MD)
Tom MacLean, St. Regis Raiders Football (Bloomfield Hills, MI)
Patrick McCrystle, Bellarmine College Prep Cross Country (San Jose, CA)
Linda Michele, Lady Roc Lacrosse (East Rochester, NY)
Mark Newton, Menlo School Football (Atherton, CA)
Steve Notarnicola, Chesapeake Knights Pop Warner Football (Chesapeake, VA)
Paul Peterson, Providence School Football and Weightlifting (Jacksonville, FL)
Freddan Riccard, Aspen Junior Hockey (Aspen, CO)
Jim Roberts, Upper Arlington High School Water Polo (Worthington, OH)
Monica Smith, Saddleback United Soccer Club (Mission Viejo, CA)
Jack Tierney, St. Philips Saints Lacrosse (Dallas, TX)
Bryan Yorke, Federal Way United Reign Soccer (Puyallup, WA)
Liberty Mutual Insurance is proud to support these men and women who commit their time and energy to ensuring that youth and high school athletes get all they can from sports -- on and off the field. Each of these award winners will receive a $250 cash prize and recognition in PCA publications and press releases.
We hope you will honor them further with a note of congratulations and any stories of how their coaching has inspired you by clicking on the Comments link below.

Thank you for your committment to youth coaching in whatever sport is your passion!! Your example and time is something that no amount of money can buy and I'm sure there are lessons taught to kids that will motivate them for their entire lives, and it's not always about the sport is it? Congratulations to Roger Barta. After reading about Roger's coaching philosopy in the book "OUR BOYS"......Try to get a little bit better each day......., I was inspired. What a great but succinct philosopy. No wonder his players want to play for him. It is something that any- one can do. All you have to do is want to. Thanks Roger Barta. Congatulations on all your success. Posted by: Jim Baker ( Email: ) at 2/17/2010 1:36 PM

Coach Mac - You teach our young men on the fields of friendly strife but your words and actions do far more. You coach our awesome Regis Raiders to be "Built for Others", on the football field, in their families and in their community. We are saddened Liam closed his final chapter as a member of the Raider Nation! It's been an awesome four years and a triumphant ending to the eigth grader's final season - CYO Champions! We will miss our time in Red & White but cherish all the wonderful memories with you and all the Raider players and families. The entire Lynch family holds you in the highest regard and wish you continued success in your coaching career! Thank you for setting the bar so high and being such a wonderful coach to Liam! Kate Lynch, grateful football Mom!!! Posted by: Kate Lynch ( Email: ) at 2/24/2010 10:44 AM

Congratulations Coach MacLean!! It couldn't have happened to a better coach! The lessons you have taught the boys on and off the field will serve them well in their growing years. Your dedication to the sport, as well as the boy's personal development, is so appreciated. We are glad we found Regis Football when we moved to the area 4 years ago! We are saddened to think we only have one more year left, but have wonderful memories from winning last year's CYO Championship Game! The picture is proudly framed on Matthew's wall! Thanks so much for all you have done for our boys! Congratulations and we'll see you in August! Posted by: Walter, Lori, Matthew and Justin Rothschild ( Email: ) at 3/9/2010 8:06 AM
