2005 National Youth Sports Awards

On Friday, March 11th, 2005, a sold-out crowd of more than 350 attended PCA's 4th Annual National Youth Sports Awards at Stanford University. The evening honored worthy coaches and youth sports organizations that espouse the character-building principles of Double-Goal Coaching® and Honoring the Game.

"The coaches and organizations being honored at the National Youth Sports Awards are teaching our young athletes to honor the game and respect each other," says Phil Jackson, PCA Spokesperson. "My hope is that others will model the standards these people have set."

This year, six coaches from around the country were presented with Double-Goal Coach Awards, three organizations received Honoring the Game Awards, and PCA honored the City of Fontana Youth Sports with a special "Connector of the Year" Award for connecting more than 5,000 parents and coaches to the principles of Positive Coaching. In addition, PCA presented a Lifetime Achievement Award to 45-year gymnastics veteran Paul Ziert.

The following distinguished coaches and athletes presented awards and/or spoke at the event:

  • Bart Conner, Olympic Gold Medalist
  • Nadia Comaneci, Olympic Gold Medalist
  • Tim Hanley, San Jose Earthquakes Goalkeeper Coach
  • Phil Jackson, PCA National Spokesperson
  • Kyle Peterson, Master of Ceremonies, Major League Baseball ESPN Broadcaster
  • Kerri Strug, Olympic Gold Medalist
  • Doug Wilson, San Jose Sharks General Manager and former NHL All-Star

    Surprise Announcement from The Jenesis Group

    This year's event was particularly noteworthy. Before PCA National Spokesperson Phil Jackson rose to deliver his keynote address at the end of the night, James Jensen of The Jenesis Group, a Dallas, Texas-based foundation started by the Jensen Family in 1987, presented a Challenge Gift of $500,000 to PCA Founder and Executive Director Jim Thompson. James then brought his sister Janet to the stage where she announced a surprise gift of an additional $500,000 in unrestricted funds for PCA.
