Q&A: Getting To Know Joe Dumars

06.05.2017

Joe Dumars is a PCA National Advisory Board Member, former NBA Executive, and All-Star player for the Detroit Pistons. The NBA Sportsmanship Award is named the Joe Dumars Trophy, and in 2006 he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Read this brief Q&A Below:

  1. The NBA's Sportsmanship Award is called the "Joe Dumars Trophy." When people think about the Pistons of that era, they think of the Bad Boys. How did a member of that team become the namesake of the league's sportsmanship award?

That's a question I get all the time. Although I loved being a part of the Bad Boys, I always stayed true to myself and never tried to be anyone else.

  1. What is your definition of character?

Character to me is being a person who carries himself or herself with class and dignity, no matter the circumstance.

  1. Which coaches most influenced you?

My High School Coach (JD Garrett) and Pistons Coach (Chuck Daly)

  1. Which current/former big-name coaches have you most admired and why?

I really respect what (San Antonio Spurs Coach Gregg) Popovich has stood for as coach on the floor and what he's stood up for off the court.

  1. Same question about NBA players?

I've always had a lot of respect for quite a few guys, but just to name a few: Mark Aguirre, Darrell Walker, Steve Smith.

  1. You and Karl Malone played on the same AAU team. How have you seen the AAU culture change basketball from when you played, your kids played, and now?

We were introduced to AAU pretty much at its inception, and the culture of AAU basketball was quite different. It was a great experience, and we genuinely looked at it as an opportunity of a lifetime.

  1. What does "positive coaching" mean to you?

Positive coaching is always making a player feel like he can be successful anytime he steps on the floor.

  1. Where would you place Chuck Daly on the spectrum of positive coaching?

Chuck Daly was one of the all-time great positive coaches. Even when he had to get on his players, he always made guys feel like they could get it done.
